NCEE “About this Publication”: This interdisciplinary curriculum guide helps teachers introduce their students to economics using popular children’s stories. Sections include definitions of key economic concepts, 21 lessons based on specific stories, teaching activities for use with any children's story, as well as an annotated bibliography of suggested titles.

From the “Introduction”

There is a growing recognition from educators and other opinion leaders that to be effective citizens, students must have a basic understanding of the economic world around them. Many excellent curriculum marterials have been developed recently to help accomplish this important task. This new elementary curriculum booklet, Teaching Economics Using Children’s Literature, is another addition to the growing collection of materials. The booklet contains practical, class-room tested, lessons to use with popular children’s stories. The economic concepts used in this curriculum are identified in Indiana’s Academic Standards -- Social Studies and the Voluntary National Council Standards developed by the National Council of Economic Education.

The following titles are used in Part 2, Teaching Lessons Based on Popular Children’s Stories. These titles are arranged in alphabetical order for easy cross-referencing, and do not follow the listed order in the book.
