You will find below relevant information on the Lexile Measures for the titles on our website. We make the assumption that teachers are at least familiar with the basics of the Lexile Framework for Reading. For teachers and administrators new to or unfamiliar with the Lexile system, you can find complete information, tools and resources, downloadable files, relevant links, and answers to questions at the Lexile website: Lexile.com

A quick starting point is the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section of the Lexile website, which can be accessed here: Lexile FAQ

What is the Lexile Measure?

From the Lexile.com website, Lexile FAQ Section

The Lexile Framework® for Reading is a scientific approach to reading and text measurement. It includes the Lexile® measure and the Lexile scale. The Lexile measure is a reading ability or text difficulty score followed by an “L” (e.g., 850L). The Lexile scale is a developmental scale for reading ranging from 200L for beginning readers to above 1700L for advanced text. All Lexile Framework products, tools and services rely on the Lexile measure and scale to match reader and text.

Because so many companies have built products around the Lexile Framework, teachers can now connect all the different components of the curriculum. Once you have a student's Lexile measure , you can connect him or her to tens of thousands of books and tens of millions of articles from periodicals, newspapers, reference books and transcripts to find material targeted to the student's reading level. For more information on Lexiles, download the free Administrator Lexile Resource Kit or the Educator Lexile Resource Kit at www.Lexile.com/kits.”

How do Grade Levels and Lexile levels relate?

From the Lexile.com website, Lexile FAQ Section

“Lexile measures do not translate specifically to grade levels. Within any classroom, there will be a range of readers and a range of materials to be read. For example, in a fifth-grade classroom, there will be some readers that are far ahead of the rest, and some readers far below the rest. To say that some books are “just right” for fifth graders assumes that all fifth graders are reading at the same level. Lexiles track a student’s reading progress over time, no matter what grade they are in. The educational levels displayed on the Lexile Map indicate approximately the middle 50 percent of materials found in a typical grade-level classroom .” (our bold, italics, and highlighting)

Lexile Codes

Detailed explanations of the Lexile codes can be found here: Lexile Codes

IG

Illustrated Glossary: “independent pieces of text such as the glossary of a book”

NC

Non-Conforming Text: “text designated as "NC" consists of semantic difficulty (vocabulary) and syntactic complexity (sentence length) that is inconsistent with the developmental appropriateness of the text. Typically these texts are written at a higher level than would be suggested by the content and the format of the text. Texts designated as "NC" are useful when matching advanced readers with text at an appropriate developmental level.”

BR

Beginning Reader: “A text designated as "BR" is any text that has a Lexile measure of zero or below. The measure is shown only as "BR" without the zero or negative number appearing.”

NP

Non-Prose Text: A text designated as "NP" is any book whose content is at least 50 percent nonstandard prose. Some examples are poems, plays, songs, and books with incorrect or no punctuation.

AD

Adult-Directed Text: A text designated as "AD" is one designed to be read to or with readers.
